Each and every time my husband goes out the door, I miss him and so do my girls. Jane especially seems to pick up on this. She will ask about Daddy morning noon and night if he is gone all day. Most recently Dan had a bike race that required 6 hours travel time. As much as I wanted to go, packing up my 3-month-old just didn’t seem the best idea when she would most likely make him late. Dan left by 7:45 am and started his adventure. Jane woke up 30 minutes after Dan’s departure, we had our morning snuggles and then it started, “Daddy?” “He went to a bike race baby.” During lunch, “Daddy seat.” Points to the one next to her.
“Daddy’s at his race, but he will be back later.” When she woke up from her nap, “Daddy home?” “Not yet baby, he will be back after dinner.” When we went to play in her kiddie pool. “Daddy outside?” “Nope, he will be home soon though.” We were sitting in the living room later that night when we heard his car pull up. Jane got so excited. Her little bare feet started slapping against the floor as she ran across the house yelling, “Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad!!!” As he bent down with open arms, Jane rushed in and she threw her little arms around him as he said, “I love you!” She responded in that sweet, sweet little girl voice, “I love you too.” I just stood there a little teary eyed as 3 months postpartum, lack a sleep, and pure love overwhelmed me. What a beautiful moment to witness. Just as Jane ran into Dan’s open arms, I run into God’s. Though I am not perfect at living my life as Christ lived His, He welcomes me with open arms time and again. He gathers me up, just as Dan did with Jane, comforts me and rejoices in the return of the prodigal daughter that I am. ***It should be noted that when Dan asked for a kiss 30 seconds after the hug, Jane said no and went on her merry way to play with her toys. Toddlers.***
